New Homeowner Checklist: What to Do After You Move In
Learn where the shutoffs and panels are now—before a leak, outage, or no-heat call makes the lesson urgent.
Household systems rarely fail in a way that matches a neat internet checklist. Use the checks below to gather useful information, then stop if the condition becomes unsafe or the same symptom keeps returning.
Find every shutoff
Locate the main water valve, fixture stops, gas shutoffs, electrical panel, and HVAC disconnects. Label them clearly and make sure the adults in the home know which ones are safe to operate.
Record the equipment
Photograph model and serial plates, note filter sizes, and collect manuals or past service records. Check the age and test dates of smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms.
Build a maintenance baseline
A first-year inspection can identify deferred work and give you a realistic order of operations. Separate safety issues from efficiency upgrades and cosmetic wants.
Leave the area and contact the appropriate emergency service for gas odors, suspected carbon monoxide, fire, arcing, smoke, or water near energized equipment.
